MACHAKOS COUNTY Assembly Officials charged with fraud

Nine members of the Machakos County Assembly Procurement Committee and a supplier have denied charges of flaunting procurement laws in acquiring 60 laptops for the Machakos county assembly. The 10 arraigned before Machakos resident Magistrate Bosibori Nyagema are Peter Wakaba, Peter Mwema, Peter Kioko, Teressia Ngina, Jonathan Munatya, Evelyn Munyira, Nancy Wambui, Raphael Makau, Nicholas Munyao and Charles Kinyanjui.
They denied that on June 18, 2013 they failed to follow due process in acquiring the laptops. Some of the accused were charged separately. Wambui who is the county's senior procurement officer was charged with asking for quotations for five of the computers from companies not on the list of qualified suppliers.
Makau, Munyao and Kinyanjui were accused of submitting a forged KRA tax compliance certificate. Seven of the accused were released on a cash bail of Sh1 million each while the other three were released on a cash bail of Sh500,000. The case will be mentioned on November 12, with a full trial taking place January 12 to 16 next year.
